Gamers will now be getting their own Wikipedia kind of online database which aims to be so comprehensive that the entire history of gaming with any relevant terms will be found there. When complete, the team behind the site believe it will be the first complete online record of a rapidly changing industry and a useful resource for those who don't know their Pong from their Pac-man.

Users will be able to browse the website and add content, very much like what Wikipedia allows one to do. We have created the Game Innovation Database in order to create a historical record of which innovations appeared when, and why they are important," said Professor Jesse Schell of Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center, and one of the team behind the site. "So many videogame innovations have occurred so fast that there is a danger that many fascinating and important innovations will be forgotten."

Game developers can use it as a tool for research and brainstorming. Game players, enthusiasts, and researchers can find information about specific games and can easily share their own knowledge. Anyone at all can contribute new innovations and edit articles.
